About the Area
Coupeville Arts and Crafts Festival
A fabulous display of visual of handcrafted art awaits visitors to the all-volunteer Coupeville Arts and Crafts Festival, held every year in Coupeville on Whidbey Island in the beginning of August.
Coupeville is at the center of Ebey's Landing National Historical Reserve on Whidbey Island, just ten minutes from Oak Harbor.
The festival celebrates, enhances and promotes local arts and crafts in Coupeville, and helps to preserve the historic qualities of the town. Beginning in 1964, it is one of the oldest, continuously running festivals in Washington State.
Only a short drive from Oak Harbor, the festival can be part of a day trip south from Coachman's Inn in Oak Harbor. Staying at Coachman's lets you be close to the festival, but away from the crowds and limited lodging in Coupeville during the festival.
You'll love the way the festival focuses primarily on high quality arts and crafts, made by hand by Pacific Northwest artisans and some beyond the region. The festival is set up along the waterfront in the historic town, affording beautiful and charming views of the cove and historic buildings in the area.
Artisans have booths along the festival route, and also may participate in the "Artisans in Action" portion of the festival, demonstrating their craft for fascinated onlookers.
Of course, the festival has many fine art and folk art pieces as well as crafts for sale, but also features a variety of other interesting and entertaining elements. For example, there are a number of free children's activities each year that are extremely popular.
There is a large children's tent near the food court where children, supervised by their parents, can participate in a variety of activities, most of which are offered at no cost. Typically Saturday between 10 and 5 p.m. and Sunday between 10 and 4:30, the tent is open for face painting, t-shirt painting, and a variety of creative crafts.
The festival is also noted throughout the area for its high quality, free entertainment. In keeping with the "handmade only" feel of the festival, only bands and artists who write and perform their own music are accepted at the festival.
There is live music throughout the day from these unique and popular artists. Usually bands on Saturday play from 10 until 6, and on Sunday from 10 until 4:30.
Visitors positively love the huge variety of food items available at the festival as well. From Bangkok Bistro, to the "Hasty but Tasty" Caravan Concessions with hamburgers and hot dogs and the accouterments to Absolutely Nuts cinnamon almonds and pecans, there's something for every taste.
