About the Area
Holland Happening Festival of Whidbey Island
Holland Happening, a celebration of Dutch Heritage happens in Oak Harbor Washington yearly in late April. The annual event features many exhibits of old Dutch trades and wares such as wooden clogs. There will be entertainment, dancing and much merriment at the celebration.
Parades are scheduled on each day of the celebration and there will be a plant sale, and wooden shoe demonstrations, an international entertainment stage and the ongoing street fairs. There is always a lot of fun to be had at these celebrations and you can find many people in traditional garb.
The first event is the Old World Dinner held at the First Reformed Church. This is a favorite among the locals and some visitors alike. Traditional Dutch foods are served, such as gehakt ballejes met jus (meatballs with gravy).
The event has been held for the last 40 years and always begins the last weekend of April. The town has the fair to celebrate the huge immigration of Dutch settlers in 1860. There is always fun, food and frivolity at the Holland Happenings and a good time is had by all.
This fun weekend comes only after some long anticipation and planning by the locals and every year brings something new to the celebration. It is not only the locals who enjoy the parades, feasts and food vendors but visitors are equally delighted by the festivities. There are many arts and crafts to see and purchase as well as the overall fun atmosphere brought by the entire weekend of events. As soon as the tulips bloom, Oak Harbor is gearing up for Holland Happenings.
One of the main events of the weekend is the canal race on Deception Pass. You can also see the beautiful Deception Pass Bridge which is now a National Landmark and connects Whidbey Island and Fidalgo Island. The entire area is absolutely beautiful and a treat to visit any time but the Holland Happenings bring out the Dutch Flavor and tradition of the area in a celebration. 2009 was the 40th annual Holland Happenings in Oak Harbor. If you plan to be anywhere in the area, you will want to stop by and enjoy the festivities.
In Oak Harbor there are many attractions, museums, parks and events. The area really is a beautiful part of the Pacific Northwest. The community grew drastically with the installation of the Naval Air Station Whidbey Island in 1942. Plan to spend the entire weekend and get a full view of this fabulous area inside and outside of the Holland Happenings.
