About the Area
Tour De Whidbey Bike Ride
Tour De Whidbey began 8 years ago as a fundraiser for Whidbey General Hospital. There are biking events to suit every age and ability. Those who are just starting out or want a less vigorous ride would start with the 10 mile family ride. The moderate trails are the 28 and 40 mile rides. Finally there are the 50, 60 and Century mile rides
Whichever event, the roads on which the riders pass are among the most scenic and beautiful in Washington. The rides are physically challenging and yet they offer the wondrous natural beauty you can imagine. Many people participate in the rides and among them are some families who take part in the 10 mile ride together. There are varied terrains for the courses and the Century ride is considered one of the most challenging in Washington.
There are maps and information available which will show you the terrain and route of the different courses. The Tour De Whidbey is now a much anticipated event with people coming from all over to participate. Most years the Tour is at the last weekend of September. The weather is usually perfect for the bike rides and the spectators alike. The courses run through the scenic back roads which allow you to see some of the most remote areas of the town. Along the way you will experience a heart healthy work out while you take in the majestic beauty. What could be better than that? The proceeds go to help Whidbey General Hospital, so it is for a great cause as well.
If you would like to be a part of the event but don't care to bike ride, they could always use more volunteers. Sponsorship opportunities are also available. This is a great way to get your name or company name out to all of the riders, locals and visitors. As with all of the Whidbey Island events, the community and the volunteers welcome visitors from all over. Over 1/3 of the riders in the event are from off-Island. The Tour De Whidbey is often the main attraction for a visit to the area but for others, the Tour is just a part of the fun. The event grows every year and this year is not expected to be any different. Riders come and bring their families, visitors come to enjoy the event and everyone enjoys themselves.
