Whidbey Island Food Lover's Paradise
If you enjoy travel destinations that celebrate local farmers and good food, you'll love Whidbey Island. With an excellent Farmer's Market and numerous small local family farms, Whidbey Island is a place that raises good eating to an art form.
With mild winters and long summer seasons, the Puget Sound is an excellent place for farmers to raise a wide range of produce from tender lettuce to juicy sweet berries to edible flowers. Whidbey Island is a jewel among the San Juan Islands of the Puget Sound. Here you can find family farms tucked away on quiet country road, surrounded with gently rolling hills that sweep down to the ocean shore. Many of these farms welcome visitors and can be easily reached by car or on an afternoon bike ride. Rent a bike in Oak Harbor and take a tour of the Island.
Hastie Lake Farms - Hastie Lake Farms is a small multi-generational family farm. With a poultry farm, fresh produce and flowers, Hastie Lake Farms is an excellent example of the best of what a family farm can offer. The poultry farm has field-fed chickens and turkeys and all of the produce and flowers are grown on the farm and are fresh picked daily. Handcrafted vegetable soaps are also available for sale.
A Knot in Thyme - A Knot in Thyme is an active horticultural farm located in Oak Harbor. They offer dried flowers, lavender and gifts focused on farm products.
Case Farm - Also located in Oak Harbor, Case Farm is a family farm with a wide range of products, from vegetables, beef calves, grain and hay. In the fall they are open for pumpkin picking.
Hummingbird Farm Nursery and Garden - Hummingbird Farm Nursery and Gardens has a wide range of unusual vegetables, herbs, vines and trees. Observe demonstration centers and participate in their classes about gardening and the benefits of gardening.
The Farm Tour is an annual event that tours numerous local farms located on Whidbey Island. This year, the tour is in the beginning of October. This is a popular event that includes a self-guided tour of the farms, an eBay art auction, a Farm to Home Fair that features local chefs demonstrating local produce and a Country Western Dance.
There are several weekly Farmer's Markets that occur on Whidbey Island. Starting in May, the Oak Harbor Farmer's Market is on Thursday afternoons from 4pm to 7pm. Saturday Farmer's Markets are at Coupeville, Greenbank Farm, South Whidbey Tilth and Bayview. Whidbey Island Farmer's Markets are an excellent place to sample and purchase the wide variety of fresh produce from local farms. Many of the local restaurants purchase their produce from the farms and feature these items on their daily menus.
