About the Area
Whidbey Island Race Week
Whidbey Island Race Week is an annual regatta event typically held in mid-July. The annual race is fantastic event for participants and spectators alike as they pick and cheer for their favorites. The event was started by a man named Gary Stuntz who wanted others to enjoy the area and water as much as he did. It has since grown and is now a big event that is anticipated by many. Those who participate in race week spend months preparing their vessels for the extravaganza. Spectators enjoy watching the many different boats make their way along the shores of Whidbey Island.
If you are not a racer and want to get out on the water you can go to Deception Pass and ride the Island Whaler boat which will take you on a fun and educational trip through the pass where you will get to see many of the different species of wildlife that live in the area. The helpful Coachman Inn can assist you with your plans.
Naturally, given the history, boats have been an important part of the Whidbey Island community for hundreds of years. While the boats have changed in design there is still a great love of the water and maritime activities here.
The Whidbey Island Race Week drives home the importance of boats and the water to the Islands and offers an enjoyable event that runs an entire week. Even if you are not much of a boating fan you will enjoy the festive atmosphere and seeing the colorful array of boats make their way along the shorelines each trying to take the lead. There are plenty of establishments where you can sit and watch the races as you dine or enjoy a beverage. Of course you may just want to pull up a patch of land and sit down anywhere to enjoy the view of the races.
Explore the charming towns in the area which host the races. The races originate out of Oak Harbor on Whidbey Island. The charm and beauty alone is enough to make you visit and stay in the area. The week long races have become a tradition that is enjoyed by boaters and non-boaters alike. The community itself hosts many events throughout the year and may very well be one of the most enjoyable places in the United States. If you have never been, the Island Races may just be a good excuse for you to make your plans to visit. Enjoy the festivities, hospitality and fun the area and the Island races have to offer.
