Exploring the hidden gems of Puget Sound, Whidbey Island's Oak Harbor is a gem among gems. Twenty-five miles from Seattle and a short two hour drive from Vancouver, Whidbey Island is easily accessible from the mainland by a short ferryboat ride.

Hidden Coves and Shopping Galore

Arguably one of the prettiest islands among the San Juan Islands, Whidbey Island is located in the southern part of the Puget Sound. From the island you can watch resident pods of Orca or migrating Gray Whales, along with sea lions and otters. While enjoying one of the many hidden coves, enjoy a picnic lunch packed just for you at Tastefully Simple. If you stop at the Oak Harbor Marina, you can rent a paddle craft, kayak or sail boat and enjoy an afternoon on the water.

In the village of Oak Harbor, you can find unique shops, antique stores and art galleries. Here you can find hidden treasures like hand crafted art glass, handmade jewelry and ceramics. If you like handcrafted textiles, there are several stores were you can find custom made clothing.

Local Gourmet Foods and Produce

If you enjoy gourmet foods, check out Greenbank Farms, where you can sample local Puget Sound and Whidbey Island Wines, pies and cheese and other products from the Puget Sound area. Started as one of the largest loganberry farms in the world, Greenbank farms has a wine tasting room that features wines from award winning wineries such as Whidbey Island Vineyard and Winery, Fishtalk Vineyards, Fair Winds Winery, Holmes Harbor Cellars and others.

To sample local farm produce visit Hastie Lake Farms, a multi-generational family farm that offers field fed poultry, fresh produce and flowers and handcrafted soaps. Another local family farm is 3 Sisters Cattle Company. 3 Sisters is a cattle farm that has grass-fed beef and a butcher shop where you can purchase their products and ship them home.

Another wonderful source for local produce is the weekly Farmer's Market. Starting in May, the Oak Harbor Farmer's Market is held Thursday afternoons from 4pm to 7pm and features produce from local farmers. Many local Oak Harbor restaurants buy their produce from these farms and feature them in their daily menus.

Oak Harbor has a number of excellent restaurants to choose from. For more casual dining, try The BBQ Joint, Pami's Restaurant and Potbelly Deli or Baycity Bistro. If you prefer something more elegant or formal, try Frasier's Gourmet Hideaway, La Conner Seafood and Prime Rib House or Lava Steakhouse and Grill.
