Whidbey Island Shopping and Gourmet Food Tasting
Just an hour north of Seattle and two hours south of Vancouver, Whidbey Island offers a delightful vacation destination alternative to locals and distance visitors alike. With abundant shopping that includes boutique stores and gourmet shops, Whidbey Island's Oak Harbor is one place you should definitely include on your list of must-see places to visit.
No matter where your tastes run to small crowded antique shops that hide unique and unusual treasures or family farms with handcrafted soaps, the village of Oak Harbor has something to offer everyone. Start with a stop in at Tastefully Simple to sample gourmet treats featuring local products. If you are planning on an open air lunch at one of the numerous parks, have a gourmet lunch packed for you while you wait, or simply purchase a basketful of goodies to sample later in the day.
Stroll along the center of town and check out the many artist galleries that show hand blown art glass, ceramics, water colors and more. If your tastes run to clothing and handmade textiles, there are several art galleries that offer handmade clothing and other unique one-of-a-kind items.
If you enjoy sampling local produce, don't miss the weekly Farmer's Market on Thursday afternoons (4pm to 7pm), starting in May or stop off at Hastie Lake Farms to sample their fresh produce grown on their family farm. Hastie Lake Farms also features fresh flowers and handcrafted soaps, all from their own farm.
Another wonderful place to visit is Greenbank Farms. Greenbank Farms is a wonderful experience where you can sample the numerous wines from local wineries in a relaxed and comfortable atmosphere. Here you can try out award winning wines from the Puget Sound and Whidbey Island boutique wineries such as Blooms Winery, Holmes Harbor Cellars, FishTalk Vineyards and Black Diamond Winery. In addition to their tasting room, Greenbank Farms has a Cheese and Specialty Store and an artisan Pie Cafe, where you can taste the celebrated pies of Jan Gunn. The Cheese and Specialty Store offers a wide selection of products unique to the Northwest and Puget Sound area.
After a visit to Greenbank Farms, also make sure to check out Lavender and Wind Farms. This farm is dedicated to products that feature lavender from their own abundant purple fields, such as soaps, lotions, honey and scones. Lavender and Wind Farms is the sponsor of the annual Taste of Provence festival, an art festival that is held every August and celebrates the wonderful refreshing fragrance of lavender.
